Working capital financing is short-term business funding for day-to-day costs such as payroll and supplier bills, repaid in fixed installments once expected revenue arrives. Keelpark Capital Group, a small-business funding broker in Jackson, Tennessee, helps Madison County owners measure the gap and connects them with lending partners, which decide whether to fund it and set the rates and terms.

Is your problem a working capital problem?
Working capital financing is designed for a business that earns enough over time but is short of cash for a while. A contractor who pays a crew every Friday and gets paid when a job is signed off, a restaurant ordering ahead of a busy stretch, a practice waiting on insurance payments: all three have earned money that has not arrived yet.
The test is whether the gap has an end. If you can name the invoice, contract or busy period that will close it, short-term financing can carry you across. If costs exceed revenue every month, borrowing adds a payment to a business that is already short, and the shortfall grows.
Measure the gap before you ask for money
A partner sets the amount, but you will negotiate from a stronger position with your own figure. Lay out the next eight to twelve weeks on one page: expected deposits on one side, bills on the other, week by week. The deepest point on that running balance, plus a sensible cushion, is the real size of the gap.
Then check the payment against the leanest week on the calendar, not the typical one. Fixed weekly debits that feel easy in a strong month can collide with payroll in a weak one. Our affordability calculator walks through that check using your own numbers.
Can working capital be used for payroll? Usually, yes; meeting wages while receivables are outstanding is one of its most common uses. Is it short-term or long-term? Most working capital products are short-term, although some partners offer longer versions with smaller installments and more total interest.
Three shapes partners commonly use
| Shape | What you get | How it is repaid | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-term installment loan | One lump sum | Fixed payments over a short term | A one-off gap of known size |
| Revolving line of credit | Draws up to a limit | Payments on the balance; repaid funds reopen | Gaps that recur at different sizes |
| Invoice-backed funding | An advance against unpaid invoices | Settled when customers pay | Businesses that bill other businesses |
A merchant cash advance is sometimes sold as working capital. It is a sale of future receipts, not a loan, and its cost is set and collected differently; the comparison further down explains why that matters.
Madison County: who tends to face timing gaps
Public data cannot describe your cash flow, but it shows where timing gaps are common. Madison County's construction sector had 197 employer establishments in 2023, and 55.3 percent of them had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Small crews often pay for labor and materials well before a progress payment clears.
Food service is labor-heavy: county food service and drinking places reported 5,238 paid employees in the March 2023 pay period (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Health care and social assistance carried the largest payroll of any sector in the county, about $700.3 million in 2023 (same source), and practices waiting on claims know the gap between treating a patient and being paid. Contractor financing, restaurant financing and practice financing go into each sector's pattern.
What a partner will want to see
- Recent business bank statements, often several months of them, read for deposit size, regularity, balances and returned items
- The source of repayment: an invoice, contract or seasonal sales history that shows when the gap closes
- Current obligations, especially other short-term loans or advances whose debits already come out of the account
- Credit history for the business and usually for the owners
- Entity records: registration in good standing and the business's tax setup
Criteria differ by partner. How underwriting works explains what reviewers do with these documents.
Working capital, a line of credit or an advance?
If the gap happens once, a short installment loan sized to it is the simplest answer. If gaps keep returning at different sizes, a business line of credit avoids applying again each time. A merchant cash advance is not a loan and is usually priced with a factor rate, so compare the total amount it will collect, and the effect of daily or weekly debits on your account, against an installment option before you decide.
Keelpark Capital Group helps you make that comparison and sends the request to partners that offer the type you choose.
